Here is a summary of the responses I received: Tom Lane from CMU writes: I don't know about commercial products for Unix, but I'm leading a group that's working on a *free* implementation of JPEG. We're not very far along yet, but if you can wait a few months we should have quite a decent implementation. Mark Connel of Solbourne Computer, Inc. uses a program called Image Alchemy which implements JPEG Compression (and lots of other file formats). He sent me the user's manual; info is available from: Handmade Software, Inc. 15951 Los Gatos Blvd, Suite 7 Los Gatos, CA 95032 +1 408 356-4143 (Fax) +1 408 358-1292 (Voice) UUCP: hsi@netcom.UUCP Cserve: 71330,3136 sunnyg@iastate.edu writes: In case you are interested, there is alchemy14.tar.Z in titan.rice.edu? in incoming/ directory. alchemy cvts jpeg, at least on a PC. It was also suggested that comp.compression would be a good place to look.
