Well, Lattice may do that but that's not what the ANSI standard says. I've been back and forward on this in comp.std.c enough times to be convinced that this is a violation of the current standard. Since Lattice's ANSI compiler came out before the standard was finished, I'm not surprised. No less a pair than Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie were caught out in a couple of places in K&R 2.
