This is a ST506/SCSI controller which is also used in the original SH205. Therefore, most software will be compatible with it. You will also need some SCSI/ACSI hostadapter - any brand will do. If you hook up a SCSI drive to your ST, you'll only need this hostadapter and no separate controller, so you're right to suppose this is much easier.
