This is usually due to the ink cartridge, not the printer, which will sometimes have some variation in ink drop size or direction resulting in the variation you have seen. A new cartridge may give better results. There are also some different print modes the driver could in theory use to mask this problem, but I don't know if our driver people are putting some of these modes into a new release of the driver (I kind of doubt it). I assume you don't have a clogged nozzle (print self test and look at the pattern), as this can lead to white bands as well. Laser printers also will have variation in black and grey scales.
