i have noticed on my IIci using an apple 13" rgb and also on a 19" b&w that
if the machine was booted with the monitors cdev set for 256 colors and then
you change to 16 colors, screen redraws get painfully slow.  you can 
actually watch the control panels window being peeled away - it probably
takes over a second.  resetting back to 256 colors makes everything zippy
again.  what's the deal?
