At least part of the reasons has to do with Framemaker's inability to handle
PC-DOS additional ^M's at the end of each text line.  I purchased an eps
clipart library for PC's with the intention (and vendor's permission) of 
converting the library for use on my NeXT.  First, I had to remove some 
binary stuff at the beginning of each file.  I am not sure what it was 
exactly, except PC-PageMaker could not screen display the eps files 
without the header info.  After that, the clip art libraries could be
used with WriteNow, ICON and any other NeXT app EXCEPT FRAMEMAKER.  Frame-
Maker (I believe it was 2.0a) read those extra ^M's and concluded that
the files were not postscript and would only insert them as text.  BTW, 
using Edit (which I really like and use a lot), I could not identify
this problem.  It took vi to show the extra characters.  After running 
the library through a unix character filter to remove the ^M's all of the 
clip art library was useable.
