I have created a new counter to number the examples in my text. I'd
like to be able to use \label{whatever} and then \ref{whatever} to
cross reference things, linking the label to the number produced by my
newcounter. I don't seem to be able to do that. The manual
on pp. 71-72 does not list newcounter as one of the things that assign
numbers. So I'm desperate.

Suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
