 A feature extraction method using neural nets was suggested in some
IEEE 1990 paper ( I don't remember which conference ). 

" A new feature extraction method by Neural Networks ",
I-Chang Jou, Shih-Shein Yu, S C Tsay.( Taiwan, R.O.C.)

It combines the merits of Back prop net and the Neocognitron for
numeral recognition. Has anyone carried out any related work in this
area ?  I would appreciate it if I could get the e-mail addresses of
the authors. Thanks.
