I just saw a special issue of Software - Practice and Experience
devoted to X windows.  It's dated October 1990, but only arrived
today.  It's not to be confused with the normal October 90 issue.
The special issue are apparently in celebration of SP&E's 20th 
anniversary; they've got shiny red covers and various extra markings
on the outside.

There are several articles by designers and implementors.
Also a fairly long critique (Why X is not the ultimate...)
