My usual response when I see someone asking for a PD/Shareware C compiler, if what they want is a single copy for someone to learn C with, is to direct them toward a product called Mix C, from Mix Software. They run ads in postcard decks and in various computer magazines, but essentially you get a basic compiler, not terribly quick or fantastic in code generation, but which does support most of ANSI-C and you get a terrific manual and tutorial book... for just under $25 including shipping and handling. Singing off, UNIX:/etc/ping instantiated (Ping Huang).
