In both towns I have had an answering machine with a 'toll saver' feature. If there has not been a message left it allows four rings then picks up. If there has been a message it picks up after two rings (thus if you are calling long distance to check for calls you can hang up on the third ring to avoid charges for no messages). I have always had it pick up after the correct number of rings as heard by either the caller or the callee (plenty of time was spent verifying this).
