I did the design by applying my knowledge of Linear Algebra and Fourier transforms. In fact I wrote the filter equations as an expression in the differentiation operator and approximated that with a Taylor series. That translated in a three-or-so stage filter (Too long ago to remember the details). However, I did'nt have any formal training in DSP.
