(That is, "2/3 majority in favour" and "100 more yes votes than no votes".) Below is the charter and a list of all votes received. PURPOSE/CHARTER: comp.human-factors To provide a forum for discussion of general issues relating to human-computer interaction (HCI) and human factors. HCI is an extremely broad topic. Examples of possible subjects for discussion include: * Design of keyboards, mice, joysticks. * Choice of command names and parameter syntax, and the effect on the number of mistakes users make. * Design of effective symbols for communicating information. * Control relations for scroll bars, switches and so on. * Use of Agents for representing semi-autonomous processes. * Use of colour in user interface design. * Methods for prototyping user interfaces. * How to evaluate the effectiveness of a user interface. * Designing effective dialogues for interactive programs. * Possible new forms of feedback -- sound, smell, touch. * Customizability vs. stability. At present, such discussions are scattered amongst the existing comp.* groups. Schaller" Paul Teich These multiple identical votes were counted as single votes (see YES and NO lists above) Both YES and NO votes were received from: ----------------------------------------- Stephen Viller Both were ignored. Don't worry, Stephen, we all have off days. :-) Anonymous votes were received from: ----------------------------------- System This vote was ignored. (I looked for votes from root, usenet, system, postmaster, sysop and guest.) Comments: --------- Vote-counting used awk to look for lines containing both "vote" and "yes" or both "vote" and "no". A log of matched lines was kept and checked manually for non-obvious phrasings such as "If you think I'm going to vote YES for your newsgroup, you're mad". There weren't any :-) Naturally the script was careful to report only one vote per message received, and votes not parsed by awk were checked manually. Next I tried to remove duplicates and anonymous votes. If anyone spots large numbers of duplicates which I missed, please let me know. Votes from Tony, John and Jonathan at this site were, of course, uncoerced; and JC and I decided not to vote. The voting was pretty overwhelming, so I think it's safe to say that the newsgroup passed. See you there! mathew
