Not that it has anything to do with the rest of the discussion, but kermit actually works quite well under CMS if you have dial-up access. It is pretty bizarre what it has to do to make the ASCII CRC's come out right even though it's working in EBCDIC... The recent ones even have server mode and long packet support.
