The solutions presented were in essence what I had tried many times before submitting the question to the net. However, the trap for young players was the _exact_ syntax of the lines in CONFIG.SYS, viz: SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_IBMVGA,VIO_IBM8514A SET VIO_IBMVGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA) SET VIO_IBM8514A=DEVICE(BVH8514A) I had originally typed the first line as: SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_IBMVGA, VIO_IBM8514A The space (believe it or not) is all it takes to completely screw everything up :-) How silly of me to presume!!
