I would try to get a modem that has both.  If that is not possible then I
would check with the people who's modems I was going to connect to the most.
If everyone else has MNP5 then getting a modem that has only V.42bis is not
going to do you much good in the compression department.

I don't know which is faster, but PC Magazine had a review of modems not
to long ago.
