Looking at comparative perfmeters versus my machine with a generic R4 installation and mwm1.1, I can see very little difference *except* on the openlook machines, it appears that the xnews process is taking up an inordinate amount of the ram/cpu. From a typical ps (edited to fit the page): %CPU %MEM SZ RSS START TIME COMMAND 0.0 25.3 3184 2716 16:38 264:01 xnews :0 -auth $HOME/.xnews.$HOST:0 0.0 0.0 40 0 16:38 0:00 xinit - - xnews :0 -auth /net/grizzly/tool2 This is after the machine has been up just under 24 hours. Why is xnews soaking up 250+ cpu minutes (more than 10 minutes per hour !) and 25% of the ram ?!!! Thanks for shedding light on the darkness, Jack -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Jack Stephens ..!{uunet|pyramid}!infmx!jms --or-- ..!jack!wzlr!jms | | Systems Programmer "Into the valley of Death rode the 600... | | Informix Software which allowed them to use the carpool lane." |
