I used Jim's config files found on byron.u.washington.edu for quite some time living with the loooooong startup time due to lisp code loadup and some bugs caused by it in various parts of GNU Emacs. With 18.57 I started to experiment a little, commented out the CANNOT_DUMP, and, yup, it worked. It also works with epoch-3.2 (pl. 2) which is based on 18.55, so I think it's no 18.57 feature. I can make my config files available for ftp (if anyone is interested... ;-) ).
