Normally, response from the window manager for actions like opening/closing icons, and moving windows is instantaneous. But I have noticed that if I use xloadimage to install a 1280x1024 8-bit color background screen, response time plummets. It can take up to 10 seconds to fully open a simple xterm window (and does not appear to be swapping either, we have 72 Meg of RAM). If I install smaller bitmaps the response time gets better as the dimensions of the image get smaller. Response is even worse if I start Xtm2d without the -su option. The same thing happens even with dxwm, but it is not as severe. I have also had the system freeze up on me entirely twice. First keyboard input is dead on the console, but the mouse can still open/close windows, but not pull down menus, and it can even copy/paste/enter commands into the xterms. But after a few minutes of this, the mouse freezes up, and other users are suddenly dead too. Any ideas on either of these problems? Are the two related? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- = Matthew M.
