That solves the problem for app-defaults files, but there are other pathnames hardcoded in libX/libXt (e.g. /usr/lib/X11/XErrorDB, /usr/lib/X11/XtErrorDB, /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB). These can be changed at compile time, but I am not aware of any environment variables to change them at runtime.
