A dumb terminal can almost always be simulated with a PC running a terminal
program, which solves the speech problem.  Using a PC as a dumb terminal is
hardly esoteric; everybody on this (and every other echo) is doing it all the
time.  The fact that a computer gets connected directly to another one rather
than through a modem doesn't change anything.
