It does a few things for you. It teaches safe gun handling, gives some basic marksmanship training (oriented towards defensive use), describes basic characteristics of handguns and usually has a bunch that you can handle, and should give you information on local laws regarding handguns and self-defense. Something else it does for you is introduce you to someone local, the instructor(s), who know about handguns. They probably have a bunch of different ones they would be willing to let you try. Here at work we have a bunch of friendly shooters who own one of just about everything. So, if someone is looking for a gun and wants to try one, we can usually arrange for the gun and the new shooter to be at a range at the same time. When I started, I found shooters incredibly willing to help. And, I still find that when someone shows up with the latest and greatest toy, they are always willing to let others give it a try. Now. if there are some folks reading rec.guns that live near you, hopefully they can point you at a friendly range or club that could help you out! .............................................................................
