I looked out the window the other day to find a squirl wrestling frantically with a good size clear plastic bag. It was plainly empty and of no use to the little creature, but nevertheless the squirrel seemed unsure what to make of that bag and was intent on divining the mysteries it contained. As I continued to watch, a smile broke over my face, and finally I laughed out loud. Why was I laughing? Clearly the mystery of the bag which might contain food or some other treasure was no laughing matter to the squirrel. I was laughing because my grasp of the circumstances permitted me to put the event in its "proper" perspective. I was not laughing at the squirrel, rather I was laughing at the absurd disproportion between the degree of the effort and the significance of the task. Yes, I think God has a sense of humor. I believe in a God who is sufficiently in control of His creation that it could not possibly threaten Him. Sometimes when my difficulties seem too overwhelming or when my successes too gratifying, I just have to think that God is laughing. It must all seem so absurdly simple to Him. And when I think of God laughing, I cannot help but laugh as well.
