We've cracked it.  It was simply a matter of explicitly routing the output to
/dev/tty i.e. pspr -v <%s >/dev/tty 
The only problem now is that, because pspr produces a little header and footer 
text to tell you it's printing the file, the Elm screen gets garbled.  With
Rainbow (the emulator we'd prefer to use) as well as dumping the output to the
printer, it also prints it to the screen.  After you've done this the screen 
bares no resemblence to the original.  Of course, this can be overcome by 
pressing Ctrl-L to redraw the screen, but can anyone think of a way Elm could
be made to automatically refresh the screen after a print?
