We're running Sun OS 4.1 here, and I was experiencing a similar problem connecting to a couple of sites. Everything seemed to be fine when I would log in manually, but when uucico attempted to log in, it wouldn't seem to recognize the "Shere=" prompt from the other system. uucico debugging output gave no clues, even with level 9 debugging. Someone suggested that I end the password that I send with "\n\c", (line feed with no carriage return), and that seemed to fix the problem. I don't know why it works, but it does.
