Why not copy an existing output format?  At PSTI, we had firmware to emulate
the Heathkit output, for customers who wanted a drop-in replacement.  You
could emulate the Heathkit, warts and all; you could also emulate the PSTI
clock, or Kinemetrics/TrueTime perhaps.
