In most of the 2/4/8/16/32/64 color modes, it is "programmable" to display all 4096 colors as well. And food for thought, the Mac display is programmable, but the resolution isn't. A standard Mac display (Apple's) is 640x480, but can be programmed to do overscan to higher numbers. The Mac display can also be Mono, 2/4/8/... 256 colors, too. But it can't be lo-res or more than 256 colors. As well, there are even 4K x 4K displays for the Mac in full 24-bit color/beauty.
