Under the said >circumstances, i have several concerns on acquiring these. Well, it just so happens that I am sitting at my father's NeXT, which is connected through Ethernet and TCP/IP to my amiga 3000, which has 2mb chip and 4mb fast. ;-) (However, I have a 3000/25, and Aztec C.) >Ethernet board(A2065): > (1) Is it possible to use thin ethernet cable ? [I heard NFS > supports only client side, so this should be yes.] which way do you mean this? You can mount a unix box's file system on your amiga (i.e, nfsmgr mount darkstar:/ darkstar, which gives you the logical device darkstar: as / on darkstar) but the amiga will *not* export file systems. (which sorta bugs me...) > (3) Can I rlogin/telnet/ftp to AmigaDOS from UNIX side ? [As AmigaDOS > is a true multitask OS, this should be a cake.] ftp yes. rlogin/telnet, no. This was rather a surprise to me - how hard can it be to do this? I mean, if you've already got daemons, and rsh works. (This is, for many many purposes, as good as rlogin... but not always...) Also note that rlogin/telnet/et. al. insist on creating windows/screens. This is to be seen as a major bummer - the Amiga can reasonably comfortably run a terminal on aux:, and that terminal is then completely incapable of using anything but ftp. >Development Kit > (4) How can i get a developers' environment such as libraries and technical > docs ? [I hope they are part of AS225 though.] Dunno... Haven't seen them anywhere. There is limited technical documentation supplied, i.e. man-page style information about things.. but not all that much. > (5) What is its interface like ? I haven't experienced TCP/IP other than UNIX > platform. ftp is pretty standard, actually. The 'tftp' interface is not yet supported, though it is reasonably well documented. There are telnet and rloginvt, which provide some degree of terminal stuff on newly opened screens, and there is rlogin, which just opens a window... So far as I know, there is no way to get rlogin/telnet to work *inside* an existing window... Which is annoying at times. >Upgrade plan > (6) What are pros and cons of AmigaDOS as a platform instead of AmigaUNIX ? > I believe AmigaDOS servers outperforms on the corresponding UNIX ones, > if they are programmed properly, Dunno. Well, I've seen about 5 versions of UUCP on the fish disks, one of them might work ok. The hard part being getting anything to run both ways, since the amiga can't recieve telnet or rlogin. I suppose you could echo information into a specific file, then a NeXT could be told to ftp the file over, and react to it, but it would still be forced to use rsh to get the amiga to initiate telnet. Telnet without a server is like an amiga without custom chips. ;-) > I would like to appreciate any help. Especially comments from real users >are much helpful. Thanks in advance.
