The cluster I work on uses this very configuration without any
problems, so I am hopeful we can solve your problems.

How do the cluster clients "log on to the server"?  Rlogin or telnet
from a terminal emulator window?  What do you mean by "the server
becomes unreachable" and "fall over and die"?  What are the exact
symptoms you see?

I don't yet have any pearls of wisdom as I don't have a clear picture
of your problem and I don't know of any particular problems with this
configuration.

I'm not sure what the "veiled reference" is as I don't have an installation
manual handy.  [And I'm not sure which installation manual you mean.  VUE?
SoftBench?]  Chapter 15 of the VUE System Administration Manual is titled
"Moving From Softbench to HP VUE" [a somewhat misleading title] and 
describes the interactions between Softbench and VUE.  There is also a
text file installed with VUE that contains much of the same information.
It is in /etc/newconfig/vue/doc/vue_softb.info.  One of these two
sources might provide some help.
