Not so, my HP EISA 486 has sockets that will accept 1/2/4/8 Mb SIMMs. However, these sockets have 72 contacts, and the memory organization is 1 Meg * 36 bits for the 4 Mb SIMM. (they are word-wide memories, so that is used as 1 Meg * 32 data bits, plus 1 Meg * 4 parity bits). HP does list 8 Mb SIMMs in its catalog, but they are ridiculously priced at $5300 / stick !!! (:-> I'm sure there must be much better sources... N.B. Most PC's use the older byte-wide SIMM's which are organized as X Mb * 9 bits. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | | | Santiago Newbery <<<<>>>> newbery@stout.atd.ucar.EDU | | Software Engineer Voice: 303-497-8762 | | Surface & Sounding Systems FAX: 303-497-8770 | | Atmospheric Technology Div. | | National Ctr. for Atmospheric Research | | Boulder, CO. | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
