I can't tell you about prices in Japan.  Hong Kong a year ago my
brother shopped around alot to find Toshiba the cheapest prices on
286's & 386's (I don't remember the model names/numbers  but one was 
T3100, I think) were $50 to $100 MORE than the same models were selling
here in Berkeley, California.
