Yes...there are other bane players out there...or at least me.  But to answer
your question...
you DO need an item.  It is also found in the pyramid and it is an item that
you have to fight for (ie. after you kill the monster, you can get it).  As a
matter of fact, you probably have it already, if you have gone through the 
temple extensively.

More hints...it is something that you have to put on an empty alcove.
