It seems that partitions mount in alphabetical order. My startup partition is the second in alphabetical order, and the one before it is apparently marked "bootable" somehow (probably because it had a system on it for awhile while I was in transition from 6.0.5 to 7). Therefore, the Mac tries booting off that partition, finds no system, marks the partition temporarily "unbootable", and starts over. I solved the problem by renaming by boot partition with a space in front of it. Now I get one start. Very nice. I did have to redo my aliases, though. Oh, well, I only had about 10. Apparently, it's also possible to permanently mark the partition unbootable, but since I may install a system there again sometime, I figured it'd be easier to just rename it.
