However... The title is a lie. It is not a book about the "art of distributed applications", but about how to write applications using older versions of Sun RPC API. It is completely oriented towards that interface: there is no general discussion of distributed applications, theory, communications, IPC, other RPC mechanisms, etc. Essentially, this book is just a manual for Sun RPC. Unless you have money to burn, use the Sun manual "Network Programming Guide".
