One of our Macintoshes recently started 'pinging' whenever an
application started or exited, and will now only sometimes recognise
our laserwriter.

A similar machine, connected to the same printer, has no pings, and
prints fine.

Disinfectant 2.4 cannot find any virus.  Does anyone recognise the
symptoms?
