The solution is actually rather easy - you must first manually set the scan rate of your monitor to approximately 31.5 KHz using whatever utility came with your card (possibly vmode?). If you look in your manual, you'll see that the mode for 800x600x256 is mode 0x30. Setting to this mode should solve the prob...if you have vmode, just type "vmode 30".
