It was a cross-cultural statement in the form of a "sacrifice", and the "sacrificial lamb" would of necessity be *spiritually* spotless (i.e., without sin). I don't think Jesus' physical appearance would make any difference. For that matter, the Romans inflicted a fair amount of disfigurement before they nailed him to the cross.
