always works for me, the userid being in the format x0000.  

If that's what you are using, it would be easier to tell why it's not working
if a copy of the bounce message could be seen.  Mail inquiry to a postmaster 
often produces helpful guidance, but I don't believe such a mailbox is
supported by applelink.
