I have had my Gateway 486/33 for only a few days but I did get this
error once already -- when I installed my new copy of Borland C++.  I
was using the 5 1/4" drives and using the Install program included on
the disks.  I was on disk 6 (out of 7) when I got this strange error.
Anyway I continued on with the installation and everything seems OK.
I had the system on high speed.
