In response to SID crashing randomly after loading a directory...

I believe there is parameter in the config file called SEPARATEDIRS or
something similar. Set this to "NO". This will solve your crashing problem,
but will mix your directories in with your file list. This is a known bug
in SID 1.06 and is corrected in the soon-to-be-released SID 2.0.
