The problem is a centronics handshaking protocol which is different from the parallel port hardware handshake protocol. After sr10.3 we discovered a number of printers with this inconsistency , including the QMS 810 . Patches 240 and 243, issued in March 1990, address this problem. Install this patch and edit your pio1.conf file to use NSTRB_ONLY handshake mode. pskq2 also addresses this problem and is the prefered solution.
