Buy a UPS >instead, they're getting down to less than $200 now and will provide >protection for your whole system, not just your RAM disk. maybe applied engineering got tired of looking at ingenuity's ads :) i thought they were kind of cute, though. as to this UPS business, what kind do you have. as i've never done this, just how do you hook up a UPS to the computer. what i have in mind is if the power goes off and the UPS needs to take over, then it will send a signal to the computer and then the computer will power off "safely". i suppose this could be done with an INIT that sets up an interrupt for this signal and then just waits for it. when it receives it, it issues an OSShutDown call (i'm not sure here, but you get the picture). too bad there isn't a "soft"-switch which will automatically turn your computer off, physically. issuing the shutdown call really isn't all that great if the computer is still on and can be zapped when the UPS runs out of power. still, it sure sounds like a nice idea. credit for the NeXT folk at comp.sys.next for inspiring it in me. albert
