My HP-48 did the same thing, only it was a missing column.  It started
out as a defect in the upper left corner that gradually got worse.
This was a known design flaw in the earlier machines.  If your machine
is a rev. E, it's probably something else.

In either case, send it to HP and they will replace it with a brand new
rev. E.  HP is really good about doing this quickly.  The whole process
only took a week for me, including Thanksgiving weekend.
