I had the same problem with blank article lists, because TheNews was trying to load articles that did not exist on the server. At least that's what *I* think is happening. After I viewed all the groups once, the problem went away. Other than this problem, it is working fine for me, and my department is planning to buy a site license for our new Mac lab.
