it appears to me that when an item is selected from the apple menu under
system 7, the finder sets the current directory to be that of the "apple
menu items" folder inside the system folder.

this is most annoying for utilities like DiskTop, which open up to the
current directory. no longer can i set my current directory from within
MPW and open up DiskTop to manipulate that directory in some fashion.

does anyone know of a way around this?
