I have installed a number of group grippers and _never_ had the problem
described - failure of the slide to go completely into battery. that
includes the convention GM version and the one on the buffer spring guide
bar { full length}.

There is one possibility: Are you sure the notch on the barrel link is
facing forward? If not the barrrel canlock up but the effect you describe
can be observed. Forward means towards the muzzle.
