I'm looking into compression schemes for 8-bit greyscale images
(512 x 384).  What is the "best" lossy compression techniques for
this type of data? Is there a technique better than JPEG that is widely used?
What are the advantages/disadvantages for these techniques?
Where can I find good references for these techniques?
