Do you have your terminal set to 2400? A Smartmodem 2400 sets the maximum speed at which it will connect based on the speed at the you are issuing "AT" commands. Is the "HS" light on when you issue commands? I mean, is it on, and then goes off when you get the CONNECT 1200? If so, this indicates that the modem on the other end really only supports 1200.
