Here goes: 1. Get the pbmplus toolkit (ftp as contrib/pbmplus.tar.Z from export.lcs.mit.edu). 2. Build it on your favorite Unix box. 3. Type: giftoppm myfile.gif | ppmtopgm | pgmtopbm | pbmtoascii > myfile.txt 4. cat myfile.txt 5. Crop and scale to taste. This produces raw text that can be catted onto any tty. If you've scaled way down, stand futher away.
