It works very well with the PaintJet XL, using the printer's build in dithering algorithms (offering a choice between 'cluster', 'dither' and 'diffuse'). The name is somewhat misleading, since it doesn't work with the older PaintJets or other PCL printers. Since its meant to be a extension of the PBMplus package, it is easy to use with the other pbm tools. I tested it against the screen look of some '.gif's (eg. lighthouse.gif, oldmill.gif) and although the colours didn't always exactly match, the results were quite nice.
